5 Things an Awesome Letter Must Have

July 28th, 2010 Filed under: Direct Marketing — Direct Marketing Author

When you develop your direct mail letter, there are five things that it must have to be successful.

1. It must have a clear offer.

2. It must address objections

3. It must have a call to action (ask the client to buy or ask for more info)

4. It must be easy for the customer to respond.

5. It must justify all discounts.

Examine your letter now and see if it does all of these. If not, take the time to fix your letter and remember that you want it to be easy for your prospect to read so also follow the tips below.

1. Use an easy to read type face. Typewriter fonts work best. Like “courier”

I also write in Times New Roman which is the text of this course.

2 Use short paragraphs.

3. Write as if it’s conversational. Don’t worry about how your English teacher taught you.

Also write it as if your prospect had a limited vocabulary – you want it to be easy to be read.

4. Use sub headlines and bold etc. to bring out points about your offer.

5. You Can add underlines and graphics

6. Give your letter a final edit.

7. Read your letter out loud to see how it sounds.

You can get some #10 envelopes and send you offer in a plain one or you can put a headline on the outside of the envelope, it’s up to you.

You can get 4 sheets of 8 ½ by 11 – printed front and back into a #10 and mail it for the cost of a letter.

If you can hand write the envelope – the handwritten envelope will get opened quicker. Because it looks like personal mail and not junk mail.

You should make the letter look personal if you use the hand written method.

Do not use a bulk mailer. You do not want your letter to go bulk rate because it looks like Junk mail and that is not your goal here. Use a live stamp.

Do not use a postage meter. Again, it makes your letter look like junk mail.

Do not use mailing labels. – make your mail look personal if you can.

Now, if you do use these things, you still might have good results. These are things that experts and gurus tell us to be ware of – that’s all. If you use a mailing label will it still get opened? Maybe. That is the whole key – do what you can to get it opened.
