Business Relationships Are a Two Way Street
March 3rd, 2010 |
Business relationships much like personal relationships, require a give & take mentality from both parties. When one side of the relationship becomes a “taker” it pulls the life right out of the relationship.
Have you noticed a decline in the responsiveness of your email list or your followers in social media? Perhaps you may be asking for them to do more for you than you are are doing in return. People on your list or following you, didn’t do so because they wanted to see how many lists they could be on or because they had some free time on their hands, they did so because in some way you were providing value to their life or their business. What “new” value are you providing to them now? Is it less or more than when they signed up? Have you gotten lazy along the way taking their allegiance for granted?
Here are 3 places where you may be dropping the ball without even realizing it:
1. Are you asking for their support in spreading the word but not reciprocating? You should be spreading their valuable content at least twice as much as you spread your own.
2. Are you talking on your blog about yourself and the great things you have done or are doing instead of what they are doing? Regardless of the topic of your blog, I am sure that you can find some way of tying its purpose to promoting the successes of those around you.
3. Are you referring business to others as much as they are referring potential customers or clients to you? Even if you could do a referred project yourself, you could gain twice as much by referring that project or help request to another expert in that field. I am willing to bet that your plate is full already so I doubt you would go broke by passing on an opportunity or two along to someone else.
Business relationships just like personal ones can be mended. Take sometime to evaluate the type of relationships you are building!
